Download the manual for this game by locating the game on and selecting “See Game Manual". Where it matters most, you're locked in to experiencing the story the way its designers would like to tell it.(Online Interactions Not Rated by the ESRB) The Games on Demand version supports English, French, and Spanish. Refuse to do what the game wants, and it spawns infinite snipers to shoot you down. The branching endings are triggered by the path you take through the final five minutes alone, while the game’s pivotal choice of whether or not to employ a weapon of mass destruction for the greater good - a moment heralded by much anguished debate about freedom and consequence in the script - turns out not to be a choice at all. To plumb real cause-and-effect into a game like this is a monstrously complex endeavour, as players of the gloriously uneven Alpha Protocol will know, and Spec Ops is, after all, more of a corridor shooter with satirical pretensions than a full-blown RPG. Often these may not seem like choices at all: you may not realise, for example, that the option exists to shoot over the heads of an angry crowd instead of blowing your attackers away, but you may be sure that whichever decision you make will come back to haunt you later. The story derives much of its force, as well as a spread of four alternative endings, from choices offered to the player at certain strategic points. In a broader sense, too, this game is limited by its nature. “Is it the videogames? I bet it’s the videogames.” “Where’s all this violence coming from, man?” crows one enemy. Less successful is the constant meta-nagging on the part of the game’s designers, whose blaring obviousness often betrays the script’s more subtle successes. Enemy characters amble and chat amiably to each other (“I can’t take your last piece of gum, man!”) unaware of your three deathbringers lurking in the shadows, while your own characters’ banter becomes more deranged and erratic as the game goes by. Small touches add to the sense of creeping disquiet and wrongness that the game seeks to assemble. Its plot devotes itself without remorse to showing you the effect of your character’s actions on his sanity, while the choice to set the scene in the upscale wastelands of sandstorm-ravaged Dubai - a decision that has seen the game banned in the UAE - adds an appropriately dreamlike spin to events. Spec Ops takes full aim at inconsistencies like this, in ways that veer from the genuinely interesting to the distinctly adolescent.

Take them for all in all, and many of our favourite videogame protagonists look like full-scale psychopaths. Not to mention the stone-cold one-man armies of the Call of Duty series, who pursue their tortuous gunsmoke vendettas without a whisper of remorse or, indeed, of PTSD. So Nathan Drake leaves a holocaust of bodies behind him as he dashes after this year’s hot historical artefact, Nico Bellic logic-chops questions of moral duty while blithely slaying his way through Liberty City’s pedestrians, and Dt Cole Phelps barks and snaps at old ladies, steals cars and hurtles around town as though he’s on the run from the police himself. Scriptwriters may bust a gut trying to write a sympathetic player character - a wisecracking archaeologist, a struggling Balkan immigrant, an upstanding LA detective - but a certain cognitive dissonance begins to make itself known as soon as the player gets hold of things, because the shooting, driving and jumping that dictate the interaction each imply goals of their own. Spec Ops’s thoroughly sobering plot bears directly on one of the most troublesome debates in gaming, the problem of constructing character and plot in a universe ruled by game mechanics. The message is clear: Spec Ops wants you to take a very close look at that gun in your character’s hand. Messages flash up periodically: “If you were a better person, you wouldn’t be here.” “This isn’t real, so why do you care?” “Do you feel like a hero yet?” By the end, the protagonist whose actions you faithfully control has transformed from a by-the-book military operative into a blood-gloved, revenge-thirsty madman.

Your squadmates’ professional military doublespeak turns to cracked hysteria - “You think I’m not going to carry this to my - grave?” sobs a hardened sniper - and, on the loading screen, the bug-eyed player character appears wrapped in the flag next to a levitating skeleton and a pile of burning bodies. Shattered hulls of luxury yachts lie beached next to mass graves full of US soldiers. Starving refugees make camp in the shells of upscale hotels and architects’ offices. A couple of hours into the game, though, things are rather different, as your three-man Delta Force squad stalks through the glass cliffs of a Dubai half-swallowed by the desert, in search of a rogue American general who has set up a military dictatorship in the city's ruins.
